Puzzle Chess Set

The first known forms of chess, known as Chaturanga, first arose around the 6th century AD in India. The pieces weren't the ones we know them as today. They were infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots instead of the pawns, knights, bishops, and rooks.

Around the 15th century, due to it's popularity among nobility, chess became known as "the royal game". This is also when the modern rules of the game started to form.

By the early 19th century, the rules were cemented and the game began to emerge as a sport. Wilhelm Steinitz laid the ground work for many aspects of the game that we now know as chess.
